Tennessee Polling Disparity

Zogby continues to buck the polling trend in Tennessee:

On the heels of other statewide polls showing President Bush with double-digit leads in Tennessee, a new Internet-based poll shows the president and Sen. John Kerry in a virtual dead heat in the state.
The poll was conducted Oct. 13-18 by New York-based Zogby International and included Internet survey results of 922 ”likely voters” in Tennessee. Of those polled, about 50% said they would vote for Bush, and about 48% said they would vote for Kerry. The margin for error in the poll was 3.1 percentage points, making the results a virtual tie.

We’ll soon find out how well Zogby’s new Internet-based polling fares compared to traditional telephone polling. There’s quite a gap between the two.

  1. What I find curious about this is that the MTSU poll came down (according to my sources) 50% Bush, 39% Kerry. No explanation about the missing 11%. I have my doubts that that many Tennesseeans are undecided, and I can’t imagine that Nader’s going to poll 11% of Tennessee votes.
Zogby’s numbers sound more believable to me.

  2. Perhaps Tennessee is a Nader stonghold. 8^)
Smoeone at Bubba’s noted the MTSU poll was skewed way towards East Tennessee. I don’t know. But I’d be shocked if Bush won by double digits. I’m noticing more Kerry yard signs around West Knoxville than Gore had in 2000.

  3. I was living in Knox in 2000, and even then I felt he had a real chance, even in republican country such as ET.
Today, I have no idea what it’s like there, as I now live in southern Nevada (And from I see here, I think Nevada will break blue this year… Bush lost Nevada with his view on Yucca Mtn — even though that is a rare (lone??) point on which I agree with him). But how will TN break this year, well West will go Blue and East will go Red. It is the purple in the middle and Chattanooga that will determine it this year. This is what I gather from my sources still living there — my friends and family.
    Therefore, please, please GOTV!!!!
