It appears Vice President Dick Cheney was right–“deficits don’t matter.” At least not those incurred during Republican administrations.
Did you realize that the national debt recently surpassed $7 trillion? I didn’t either. Maybe because no one bothered to cover it.
Where is the outrage that we had back in 1992? Where is Lead or Leave? Third Millenium? The Concord Coalition? A Ross Perot sounding off on this fiscal irresponsiblity? Where are Bob Kerrey and Warren Rudman? I was livid when that tax bill was passed last spring. These are the peak earning years of the baby boom generation and they are bailing out on the country just when we need them the most to be responsible, just before they go into retirement. Instead they are passing a very big buck to my generation, and if I have children, their generation. I have my issues with Dean but he is the only one who seems to take this issue seriously, so he has my vote.
The Concord Coalition and a few other voices crying in the wilderness are still out there, though no one seems to be listening to them. Remember the balanced budget constitutional amendment idea? Haven’t heard much about that in a while.
