Bicycle Safety Lesson

Wave with care:

George W Bush had one hand off his handlebars when he came off his bicycle during last July’s G8 summit, according to newly-published police documents.
. . .
“As the president passed the junction at speed he raised his left arm from the handlebars to wave to the police officers present while shouting ‘Thanks, you guys, for coming’.
“As he did this he lost control of the cycle, falling to the ground, causing both himself and his bicycle to strike (the officer) on the lower legs. (The officer) fell to the ground, striking his head.
“The president continued along the ground for approximately five metres, causing himself a number of abrasions. The officers… then assisted both injured parties.”

Sadly, this isn’t the worst loss-of-control wreck we’ve experienced over the past five years.

Existing Speed Limits Are Dangerous

One might be lead to believe that by watching this video.
A group of young people attempt to point out that the 55 m.p.h. speed limit just doesn’t cut it in Metro Atlanta. They formed their own “lawful” rolling roadblock; you can see the results.
I’ve long wondered what the point is of having a speed limit that virtually everyone ignores. Other than meeting federal highway funding requirements, there isn’t one. And frankly it’s more dangerous when there’s a wider disparity between slower drivers and faster ones.

Another Reason To Watch The Keith

Hilarious.
Olbermann’s show is by far the best/most entertaining nightly TV news channel show. It’s a shame he has MSNBC ratings.
I assume O’Reilly’s petition to remove Olbermann is some sort of controversy/publicity stunt–and a lame one at that. Great comeback by the Keith.

Being “Fair” To The Iraqi People

Once again, we can all be thankful that the grown ups are in charge:

During a trip to the Middle East, [Secretary of State Condoleezza] Rice said speculation about whether a civil war was brewing could be harmful.
“I don’t think we do the Iraqi people any good or really that we are fair to them in continually raising the specter that they might fall into civil war when it seems that the only people who want a civil war in Iraq are the terrorists,” she told reporters.

Yes, our liberal media at work again. How unfair of them to mention the “cw” word (actually words) when there were only 150 people killed and 128 mosques attacked yesterday? This kind of reporting is just what the enemy wants.
Speaking of the TV heads, I found it odd last night when I saw at least two rightists suggesting that Iran was behind the Samarra mosque bombing. Is there any evidence to substantiate this, or are they simply making stuff up again?

White House Admission Cost

Interesting:

Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said Monday that disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was paid $1.2 million to organize his 2002 meeting with President Bush, but denied the money came from the Malaysian government.
Mahathir told reporters he was aware a payment was made to Abramoff, but he didn’t know who made it. He said he had been persuaded by the U.S. think tank Heritage Foundation to meet with Bush at the time.
. . .
Mahathir said the Heritage Foundation believed he could help “influence (Bush) in some way regarding U.S. policies.”

(1) I hope a Lincoln Bedroom stay was available at that price level.
(2) Either someone has a lot of money to throw around or Abramoff could make a convincing case that he had an “in” at the White House.
(3) Why does a foreign prime minister need to hire a lobbyist, anyway?
(4) Odd that Mahathir didn’t know where the money came from in this purported transaction.
(5) Nice to see the Heritage Foundation keeping busy looking out for us, huh?

Peppered And Apologetic

What a world:

Harry Whittington said Friday he was sorry for what Dick Cheney and his family have “had to go through” after the vice president shot him in a weekend hunting accident.
. . .
“My family and I are deeply sorry for all that Vice President Cheney and his family have had to go through this week,” Whittington said.

Yeah, I’m sorry that my face got in between you and that crippled bird you were courageously shooting. It’s unfortunate all these mean people are asking questions.
