{"id":1049,"date":"2004-08-02T12:06:51","date_gmt":"2004-08-02T16:06:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2004\/08\/muhammad_naeem_noor_khan\/"},"modified":"2004-08-02T12:06:51","modified_gmt":"2004-08-02T16:06:51","slug":"muhammad_naeem_noor_khan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2004\/08\/muhammad_naeem_noor_khan\/","title":{"rendered":"Muhammad Naeem Noor Khan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <i>New York Times<\/i> reports infromation gathered from a captured 25-year-old Pakistani Al Qaeda computer engineer <a title=\"Captured Qaeda Figure Led Way to Information Behind Warning\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/08\/02\/politics\/02intel.html?ex=1249099200&#038;en=fb9a624b3a180ee7&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland\">lead to the raised terror alert<\/a> issued yesterday:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the official said &#8220;documentary evidence&#8221; found after the capture had demonstrated in extraordinary detail that Qaeda members had for years conducted sophisticated and extensive reconnaissance of the financial institutions cited in the warnings on Sunday.<br \/>\nOne senior American intelligence official said the information was more detailed and precise than any he had seen during his 24-year career in intelligence work. A second senior American official said it had provided a new window into the methods, content and distribution of Qaeda communications.<br \/>\n&#8220;This, for us, is a potential treasure trove,&#8221; said a third senior American official, an intelligence expert, at a briefing for reporters on Sunday afternoon.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to know how much to make of some of these anonymously-sourced stories, particularly on the intelligence front.  This significance of this may be exaggerated.  But I have to wonder: Has the capture of this single individual gone further to foil a potential Al Qaeda attack than the thousand troops and hundreds of billions consumed in Iraq?  Interesting thought exercise.
