{"id":1095,"date":"2004-08-22T07:41:38","date_gmt":"2004-08-22T11:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2004\/08\/vote_early_vote_often\/"},"modified":"2004-08-22T07:41:38","modified_gmt":"2004-08-22T11:41:38","slug":"vote_early_vote_often","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2004\/08\/vote_early_vote_often\/","title":{"rendered":"Vote Early, Vote Often"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Does anyone have any confidence <a title=\"Exposed: Scandal of double voters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/front\/story\/224449p-192807c.html\">in the Florida election<\/a>?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some 46,000 New Yorkers are registered to vote in both the city and Florida, a shocking finding that exposes both states to potential abuses that could alter the outcome of elections, a <i>Daily News<\/i> investigation shows.<br \/>\nRegistering in two places is illegal in both states, but the massive snowbird scandal goes undetected because election officials don&#8217;t check rolls across state lines.<br \/>\n. . .<br \/>\nComputer records analyzed by <i>The News<\/i> don&#8217;t allow for an exact count of how many people vote in both places, because millions of names are regularly purged between elections.<br \/>\nBut <i>The News<\/i> found that between 400 and 1,000 registered voters have voted twice in at least one election, a federal offense punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.<br \/>\n. . .<br \/>\nNearly 1,700 of those registered in both states requested that absentee ballots be mailed to their home in the other state, where they are also registered. But that doesn&#8217;t raise red flags with officials in either place.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s surprising that election officials don&#8217;t at least conduct an effective check when they mail ballots to other states.
