{"id":1515,"date":"2005-03-01T11:54:35","date_gmt":"2005-03-01T16:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2005\/03\/putins_read\/"},"modified":"2005-03-01T11:54:35","modified_gmt":"2005-03-01T16:54:35","slug":"putins_read","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2005\/03\/putins_read\/","title":{"rendered":"Putin&#8217;s Read"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/politics\/war_room\/archive.html?blog=\/politics\/war_room\/2005\/02\/28\/cbs\/index.html\">Tim Grieve<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When George Bush sat down with Vladimir Putin in Bratislava last week to deliver his long-awaited lecture on civil liberties and freedom of the press, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/7037620\/site\/newsweek\/\">Newsweek <\/a> says Putin shot back with an attack of his own: &#8220;We didn&#8217;t criticize you when you fired those reporters at CBS.&#8221;<br \/>\nBush was apparently slack-jawed, and senior White House aides were angry. &#8220;Putin thought we&#8217;d fired Dan Rather,&#8221; one administration official told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,1032354,00.html\">Time<\/a>. &#8220;It was like something out of &#8216;1984.&#8217;&#8221;<br \/>\nNewsweek, rising to the defense of freedom of the press in these United States, says it&#8217;s &#8220;all too clear&#8221; that Putin sees the relationship between Bush and the American media as being &#8220;just like his own.&#8221;  Presumably, that means that Putin thinks Bush controls the U.S. media in the same way that he controls the Russian media.
