{"id":162,"date":"2003-11-14T13:42:05","date_gmt":"2003-11-14T18:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2003\/11\/cleaning_up_our_schools\/"},"modified":"2003-11-14T13:42:05","modified_gmt":"2003-11-14T18:42:05","slug":"cleaning_up_our_schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2003\/11\/cleaning_up_our_schools\/","title":{"rendered":"Cleaning Up Our Schools"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With all the issues in America&#8217;s educational system today, it&#8217;s refreshing to see school administrators are finally getting serious about <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/sections\/GMA\/Relationships\/Kiss_Girls_Suspended_031114-1.html\">our <i>real<\/i> problems<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Two high school girls were suspended for sharing a 12-second-long protest kiss, which they say was part of their English class assignment.<br \/>\nStephanie Haaser, a junior at River Hill High School, says she jumped on a table during lunch and yelled &#8220;end homophobia now&#8221; before engaging in the kiss with a female friend.<br \/>\nHaaser said her very public display of protest in the form of a kiss was part of an English class assignment that required students to perform a &#8220;non-conformist&#8221; act.<br \/>\n. . .<br \/>\nRiver Hill administrators suspended Haaser and her protest partner from school for two days after the Nov. 5 stunt. School officials said the girls were suspended because they disrupted the &#8220;orderly operation&#8221; of the school.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Haaser, who is not gay, doesn&#8217;t have a disciplinary record, and had a 4.0 GPA last year, also risks being kicked out of the National Honor Society due to her suspension.
