{"id":2172,"date":"2007-04-11T23:05:27","date_gmt":"2007-04-12T03:05:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2007\/04\/war_czar\/"},"modified":"2007-04-11T23:05:27","modified_gmt":"2007-04-12T03:05:27","slug":"war_czar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2007\/04\/war_czar\/","title":{"rendered":"War Czar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Buried amidst all the Don Imus\/Duke lacrosse brouhaha today are two interesting stories regarding the Iraq war effort:<br \/>\nFirst, a day after President Bush <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2007\/04\/20070410-1.html\">tried to blame Congress<\/a> for over stretching the military and lengthening troop deployments, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/04\/11\/world\/middleeast\/11cnd-military.html?ex=1333944000&#038;en=30cae937154255d4&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland&#038;emc=rss\">announced<\/a>  tours of duty would be extended to 15 months.<br \/>\nDarn those Democrats!  If they had only passed a non-restrictive emergency spending bill 12 hours earlier, all of this could be avoided.  Now the troops must pay the price.<br \/>\nIn another development, the <em>Washington Post<\/em> revealed that the White House is looking to <a title=\"3 Generals Spurn the Position of War 'Czar'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2007\/04\/10\/AR2007041001776.html?nav=hcmodule\">to create a &#8220;War &#8216;Czar'&#8221;<\/a> to handle responsibilities previously managed by the Commander-in-Chief.  Here&#8217;s the money quote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The very fundamental issue is, they don&#8217;t know where the hell they&#8217;re going,&#8221; said retired Marine Gen.
