{"id":2205,"date":"2007-07-03T17:23:20","date_gmt":"2007-07-03T21:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2007\/07\/foreigntrained\/"},"modified":"2007-07-03T17:23:20","modified_gmt":"2007-07-03T21:23:20","slug":"foreigntrained","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2007\/07\/foreigntrained\/","title":{"rendered":"Foreign-Trained Doctors In The U.S. And U.K."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of the Scottish burning SUV catastrophe, one of the hot TV news obsessions is foreign-trained doctors, since  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2007\/WORLD\/europe\/07\/03\/uk.doctors\/index.html\">six doctors from abroad<\/a> have been detained or questioned in that investigation.<br \/>\nI was watching CNN today and one reporter mentioned that <a href=\"http:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/TRANSCRIPTS\/0707\/03\/ywt.01.html\">37% of doctors in the United Kingdom are &#8220;qualified overseas&#8221;<\/a>.  That seems a little high to me.  I was curios to compare it to the percentage in the United States.<br \/>\nAccording to this <a href=\"http:\/\/content.nejm.org\/cgi\/content\/full\/353\/17\/1810\"><em>New England Journal of Medicine<\/em> article (2005)<\/a>, 25% of the U.S. physician workforce is trained abroad (see <a href=\"http:\/\/content.nejm.org\/content\/vol353\/issue17\/images\/large\/10t1.jpeg\">Table 1<\/a>).  But according to the same study, 28% of UK doctors are international graduates.  [This study cited 39,000 international doctors, while the CNN reporter said there are 89,000.]<br \/>\nThat discrepancy aside, it&#8217;s evident there&#8217;s many international doctors practicing in the U.S., probably approaching the percentage in the U.K.<br \/>\nSo the question lies ready to be explored by the enterprising mind of a worry-wort American reporter: &#8220;Could it happen here?
