Most of the Tennessee Valley is in a D4 &#8220;Exceptional&#8221; Drought on the October 23 map.  The site also has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drought.unl.edu\/dm\/6_week.gif\">six-week<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drought.unl.edu\/dm\/12_week.gif\">twelve-week<\/a> animations.  East Tennessee has been in a D3 or D4 drought throughout those periods.<br \/>\nDrought Monitor also has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drought.unl.edu\/whatis\/palmer\/pdsihist.htm\">historical maps of the Palmer Drought Index<\/a> going back to 1895.  According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.drought.unl.edu\/whatis\/palmer\/pdi1895.gif\">this map<\/a>, Tennessee experienced severe or extreme droughts 5% &#8211; 10% of the time from 1895 -1995.
