{"id":2302,"date":"2008-04-27T23:52:49","date_gmt":"2008-04-28T03:52:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2008\/04\/lincoln_mania\/"},"modified":"2008-04-27T23:52:49","modified_gmt":"2008-04-28T03:52:49","slug":"lincoln_mania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2008\/04\/lincoln_mania\/","title":{"rendered":"Lincoln Mania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve noticed, particularly when watching C-SPAN, that some people are already starting to play up the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.c-span.org\/lincoln200years\/\">200th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln&#8217;s birthday<\/a>, despite the fact that we are nearly a year away from the event.<br \/>\nNot to diminish Lincoln&#8211;who is almost universally regarded as one of America&#8217;s greatest leaders&#8211;but I&#8217;ve never understood the fascination some people have with the 16th president.  It&#8217;s one thing to have a healthy historical curiosity about the man. It&#8217;s another to collect memorabilia and attend annual conferences and acquire shelves full of books.  That smacks more of deification.<br \/>\nThere are a number of great figures in American history.  Yet none of the other ones seem to have the obsessed following that Lincoln commands.
