{"id":2367,"date":"2008-12-22T09:02:09","date_gmt":"2008-12-22T14:02:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2008\/12\/religiosity_and\/"},"modified":"2008-12-22T09:02:09","modified_gmt":"2008-12-22T14:02:09","slug":"religiosity_and","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2008\/12\/religiosity_and\/","title":{"rendered":"Religiosity and the Business Cycle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.macromarketmusings.blogspot.com\/\">Dr. David Beckworth<\/a>, a former college classmate of mine who is now an assistant professor of economics at <a href=\"http:\/\/fin-eco.mccoy.txstate.edu\/\">Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas<\/a>, wrote a paper entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/search.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1103142\">Praying for a Recession: The Business Cycle and Protestant Religiosity in the United States<\/a>.&#8221;  His research suggests that during economic recessions, evangelical churches grow at an accelerated rate, while mainline Protestant churches continue their long-term decline, albeit at a slower rate.<br \/>\nThe paper was featured in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/14\/nyregion\/14churches.html?_r=1&#038;hp\">a recent <em>NY Times<\/em> article<\/a>.  Yesterday he was interviewed on CNN&#8217;s morning program to discuss his findings.
