{"id":2378,"date":"2009-03-27T12:01:57","date_gmt":"2009-03-27T16:01:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2009\/03\/internet_forum\/"},"modified":"2009-03-27T12:01:57","modified_gmt":"2009-03-27T16:01:57","slug":"internet_forum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2009\/03\/internet_forum\/","title":{"rendered":"Internet Forums English Annoys Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today, over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bikeforums.net\/index.php\">Bike Forums<\/a>, I received the following message from a new forum member:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>how ya doin? bike noob here. interested in finding someone close by that knows some good places to ride. know anyone interested in some laid back riding?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I considered not replying to the question simply because the questioner used the so-called word <em>noob<\/em> (plus the writer didn&#8217;t bother to mention where he or she lives).<br \/>\nI&#8217;m not a Grammer Nazi; anyone who has read this site before knows I make my share of mistakes.  But at least I <em>try<\/em> to use standard English.<br \/>\nWhat is it about forums that seemingly invites users to unload word fragments and other common gibberish on the innocent public?  &#8220;Words&#8221; such as srsly, prolly, &#8216;cuz, r, u, and dunno.  Not to mention the rampant non-use of capitalization.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/language_tools?hl=en\">Google Language Tools<\/a> should add an &#8220;Internet Forums&#8221; option to its translation box so you can convert some of this stuff to English.<br \/>\nI assume some of this usage is an extension of the texting culture; people are simply too lazy to type out words.<br \/>\nWhatever the case, it annoys me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2009\/03\/internet_forum\/\" rel=\"bookmark\" title=\"Permalink to Internet Forums English Annoys Me\"><p>Today, over at Bike Forums, I received the following message from a new forum member: how ya doin? bike noob here. interested in finding someone close by that knows some good places to ride. know anyone interested in some laid back riding?
