Once in one of my college literature classes we were saddled with making a presentation.\u00a0 I chose this<\/a> carpe diem<\/a><\/i> classic by Robert Herrick:<\/p>\n

To the Virgins, to make much of Time<\/strong><\/p>\n

GATHER ye rosebuds while ye may,
\nOld Time is still a-flying:
\nAnd this same flower that smiles to-day
\nTo-morrow will be dying.<\/p>\n

The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
\nThe higher he’s a-getting,
\nThe sooner will his race be run,
\nAnd nearer he’s to setting.<\/p>\n

That age is best which is the first,
\nWhen youth and blood are warmer;
\nBut being spent, the worse, and worst
\nTimes still succeed the former.<\/p>\n

Then be not coy, but use your time,
\nAnd while ye may, go marry:
\nFor having lost but once your prime,
\nYou may for ever tarry.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

To make my talk more interesting, I distributed a rose to each female class member.<\/p>\n

I don’t know what said classmates truly thought of my feature.\u00a0 In hindsight, it may have been a bit of a downer.\u00a0 All carpe diem<\/em> literature has a depressing element to it (we’re all going to die), but this poem suggests females have an even shorter shelf life (of desirability).<\/p>\n

Oh well.\u00a0 At the time it seemed like a good idea to break the monotony of class lectures.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
