{"id":2472,"date":"2014-06-11T22:41:49","date_gmt":"2014-06-12T02:41:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/?p=2472"},"modified":"2014-06-11T22:41:49","modified_gmt":"2014-06-12T02:41:49","slug":"dont-be-evil","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2014\/06\/dont-be-evil\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cDon\u2019t Be Evil\u201d?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I generally like Google.\u00a0 It&#8217;s my go-to search engine, and I use several of its products: Drive, Voice, Maps, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/+BrianArner\" target=\"_blank\">G+<\/a> (though that&#8217;s been largely dormant).<\/p>\n<p>By and large I don&#8217;t have issues with Google&#8217;s policies.\u00a0 I think it tries to live up to its <a href=\"http:\/\/investor.google.com\/corporate\/code-of-conduct.html\" target=\"_blank\">unofficial motto<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Google Code of Conduct is one of the ways we put \u201cDon\u2019t be evil\u201d into practice. It\u2019s built around the recognition that everything we do in connection with our work at Google will be, and should be, measured against the highest possible standards of ethical business conduct.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But today <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/todayilearned\/comments\/27whp2\/til_that_google_prefers_dogs_to_cats_their_code\/\" target=\"_blank\">Reddit<\/a> revealed a disturbing fact about Google&#8211;its <a href=\"http:\/\/investor.google.com\/corporate\/code-of-conduct.html#toc-dogs\" target=\"_blank\">Dog Policy<\/a> (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Google\u2019s affection for our canine friends is an integral facet of our corporate culture.
