Bach, BWV 140\/4]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4kTeQ3sbKwI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; encrypted-media\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a video of me playing trumpet with an instrumental ensemble at church.<\/p>\n<p>We played part of Johann Sebastian Bach&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wachet_auf,_ruft_uns_die_Stimme,_BWV_140\"><i><span lang=\"de\">Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme<\/span><\/i><\/a> (<span class=\"nowrap\">BWV 140), commonly known as <i>Sleepers Wake<\/i>.\u00a0 The church cantata is based upon Philipp Nicolai&#8217;s 1599 hymn <\/span><i><span lang=\"de\"><a title=\"Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wachet_auf,_ruft_uns_die_Stimme\">Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme<\/a>, <\/span><\/i>which is about the parable of the Ten Virgins.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uvm.edu\/~classics\/faculty\/bach\/BWV140.html\">English coral lyrics<\/a> to this movement, sung to the tune of the trumpet line, are as follows:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Zion hears the watchmen singing,<br \/>\nHer heart within for joy is dancing,<br \/>\nShe watches and makes haste to rise.<br \/>\nHer friend comes from heaven glorious,<br \/>\nIn mercy strong, in truth most mighty,<br \/>\nHer light is bright, her star doth rise.<br \/>\nNow come, thou precious crown,<br \/>\nLord Jesus, God&#8217;s own Son!<br \/>\nHosannah pray!<br \/>\nWe follow all<br \/>\nTo joy&#8217;s glad hall<br \/>\nAnd join therein the evening meal.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I enjoyed performing this with a group of talented musicians.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2018\/03\/sleepers-wake-j-s-bach-bwv-140-4\/\" rel=\"bookmark\" title=\"Permalink to &#8220;Sleepers, Wake!&#8221;  [J.S.
