Notwithstanding its own prior bans on the importation of beef from countries with mad cows, the U.S. government <a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=568&#038;e=2&#038;u=\/nm\/20040101\/bs_nm\/madcow_dc\">wants the world to buy U.S. beef now<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The United States wants the world to start buying its beef again, after discovery of its first case of mad cow disease in late December, an uncommonly quick resumption of trade for nations wary of the brain-wasting disease.<br \/>\n. . .<br \/>\nU.S. officials acknowledge they are asking for more flexibility from trading partners than the United States showed in the past. They say international standards have evolved as scientists learn more about BSE and how to control it.<br \/>\n&#8220;So, in fact, while we may have been part of the problem in the past, we have taken a very active role in terms of trying to change that standard,&#8221; said Ron DeHaven, USDA&#8217;s chief veterinary officer, during a news conference on Wednesday.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Canada has a mad cow and we ban their imports for months,  but when we have a mad cow everyone else is supposed to continue buying our beef without interruption . . . because we say so.<br \/>\nIt&#8217;s nice being able to write the rules as you go along, isn&#8217;t it?
