{"id":446,"date":"2004-01-08T12:25:18","date_gmt":"2004-01-08T17:25:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2004\/01\/political_theology\/"},"modified":"2004-01-08T12:25:18","modified_gmt":"2004-01-08T17:25:18","slug":"political_theology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2004\/01\/political_theology\/","title":{"rendered":"Political Theology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If this is an example of how Howard Dean is going to talk about his religion, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theunionleader.com\/articles_showa.html?article=31248\">perhaps he shouldn&#8217;t be doing it<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;The overwhelming evidence is that there is very significant, substantial genetic component to it (homosexuality),&#8221; Dean said in an interview Wednesday. &#8220;From a religious point of view, if God had thought homosexuality is a sin, he would not have created gay people.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure where homosexuality falls in the nature versus nurture debate, but the fact that it exists doesn&#8217;t mean that God approves of it.  Humans are capable of doing plenty of things which God probably didn&#8217;t intend for them to do.<br \/>\nI do give Dean credit for being honest in discussing the role religion has paid in his political decision making:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the interview Wednesday, Dean said that he does not often consider his religious views when making policy. &#8220;I don&#8217;t go through an inventory like that when making public policy decisions,&#8221; he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That&#8217;s the approach officeholders should have.
