{"id":611,"date":"2004-02-10T12:55:17","date_gmt":"2004-02-10T17:55:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2004\/02\/heart_problems\/"},"modified":"2004-02-10T12:55:17","modified_gmt":"2004-02-10T17:55:17","slug":"heart_problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2004\/02\/heart_problems\/","title":{"rendered":"Heart Problems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know why <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story2&#038;cid=541&#038;u=\/ap\/20040210\/ap_on_he_me\/atkins_medical_report_1&#038;printer=1\">this<\/a> is coming out now, but I&#8217;m not surprised by it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dr. Robert Atkins, whose popular diet stresses protein-rich meat and cheese over carbohydrates, weighed 258 pounds at his death and had a history of heart disease, a newspaper reported Tuesday.<br \/>\nAtkins died last April at age 72 after being injured in a fall on an icy street.<br \/>\nBefore his death, he had suffered a heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing a report by the city medical examiner.<br \/>\nAt 258 pounds, the 6-foot-tall Atkins would have qualified as obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&#8217;s body-mass index calculator.<br \/>\nDiet is one potential factor in heart disease, but infections also can contribute to it.<br \/>\nStuart Trager, chairman of the Atkins Physicians Council in New York, told the Journal that Atkins&#8217; heart disease stemmed from cardiomyopathy, a condition thought to result from a viral infection.<br \/>\nAtkins&#8217; weight was due to bloating associated with his condition, and he had been much slimmer during most of his life, Trager said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes.  <i>Of course<\/i> a viral infection is to blame.<br \/>\nI have a bad feeling that we&#8217;re going to see a lot of heart attacks a few years down the road.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2004\/02\/heart_problems\/\" rel=\"bookmark\" title=\"Permalink to Heart Problems\"><p>I don&#8217;t know why this is coming out now, but I&#8217;m not surprised by it: Dr. Robert Atkins, whose popular diet stresses protein-rich meat and cheese over carbohydrates, weighed 258 pounds at his death and had a history of heart disease, a newspaper reported Tuesday.
