{"id":670,"date":"2004-02-22T07:36:45","date_gmt":"2004-02-22T12:36:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/wordpress\/2004\/02\/license_plates_again\/"},"modified":"2004-02-22T07:36:45","modified_gmt":"2004-02-22T12:36:45","slug":"license_plates_again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.brianarner.com\/weblog\/2004\/02\/license_plates_again\/","title":{"rendered":"License Plates Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <i>Knoxville News Sentinel<\/i> has an article on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knoxnews.com\/kns\/state\/article\/0,1406,KNS_348_2674146,00.html\">proposal in the state legislature<\/a> intended to &#8220;depoliticize&#8221; the license plate issue.<br \/>\nYou have to read 3\/4 of the article before you discover what the proposal is, and even then it&#8217;s not very clear:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The bill, in essence, would take the Legislature out of the decision-making process and allow issuance of a specialty plate for any organization meeting minimal qualifications, provided it can sign up 1,000 people in advance who pledge to purchase the new plates at $35 each.<br \/>\nThe minimum criteria, [Rep. Jamie] Hagood said, would specify that the plate&#8217;s content &#8220;not be obscene,&#8221; that it not closely resemble another plate already issued and that the design &#8220;could not interfere with law enforcement.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This is an improvement over the Legislature having total control of license plate speech; presumably both sides will be able to speak on an issue.<br \/>\nStill, I wonder why we need this fuss.  It seems the non-profits have become so dependent on state-assisted fund raising that they are now calling the shots.
