So I&#8217;m not interested in the details of this purported fight over the story.  Still, <a href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=638&#038;ncid=762&#038;e=1&#038;u=\/nm\/20031024\/en_nm\/leisure_smart_dc\">this article<\/a> caught my eye.<br \/>\nBased on past coverage, we can easily accept this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>An unseemly clash for control has erupted among the three major U.S. television networks, Oprah Winfrey and a leading publisher over competing plans to tell the sensational tale of teenage kidnap victim Elizabeth Smart.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But how about this?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The various media outlets have all pledged to treat her story with <i>restraint and dignity<\/i>. After all, the object of their attention is a 16-year-old girl from Utah who police say was sexually assaulted during nine months in captivity at the hands of a homeless street preacher and his wife.<br \/>\n(Emphasis added.)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ha!  &#8220;Restraint and dignity&#8221;?  Why start now?<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t understand the public fascination that&#8217;s driving the demand for this programming.  But it&#8217;s out there.
