I’m obviously not NASCAR fan; I didn’t hear about this incident from last Sunday’s race until yesterday:
NASCAR doesn’t share their perception. It ordered driver Derrike Cope to remove the Redneckjunk.com sponsorship logos from his car prior to last weekend’s activities at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Redneckjunk.com is a Naples, Fla.-based company that sells used sporting goods and auto parts.
”We just didn’t feel like that projected the proper image of our sport,” said NASCAR spokesman Herb Branham.
Among sponsors permitted to participate in the Atlanta race were three beer companies and a casino. It’s also very difficult to secure a sponsorship.
Funny (and ironic) how this “family-friendly” sport takes ads from beer companies, casinos, and Viagra, but not something containing “redneck.” It’s all about image, isn’t it? Though I suspect this “image” might be a bit different if Redneckjunk.com had a few million to spend on advertising.
The world of NASCAR is not concerned with what is deemed appropriate in terms of advertising. Only if of course the advertising is putting money into their pockets.
It’s a total shame opportunities are only givin to big companies. Opportunity should be equal for all who make the effort, small businesses or large ones.
For those of us who consider ourselves a bit “redneck” I find Nascars opinions of what is appropriate to be complete joke. How is Viagra appropriate? The issue here is little fish vs big fish. Nascar doesn’t give a rats a** about the little fish.
Hat’s off to Tom Connelly CEO of redneckjunk.com and the many more who will follow him. Don’t give up. This is the land of opportunity still, or isn’t it?
I cant believe peopke are arguing over this. You would think that all of you red necks would just get alomg and consume your dip and leave the rea issues of finaince to the people who really make the decisons. Like us in the north.
