The TV news is all over the “surprise” handover of Iraq two days early (though insiders started preparing for this a week ago). I think they are all miffed because they lost out on some planned programming and nifty graphics they had planned for the event.
I guess we shouldn’t be surprised that the only other people that are really playing this up are U.S. politicians. Interestingly, MSNBC has devoted more attention to Condi sneaking Mr. President a note during his meeting (as if Bush didn’t know this was going to happen) than it has covered the reaction of the newly “sovereign” Iraqi citizens themselves. Apparently, sovereignty isn’t such a big deal when you have car bombs sounding off and 150,000 foriegn troops roaming about your land.
Damned if they do… damned if they don’t. Even when it’s the right thing to do and good for the people of Iraq, liberals will complain about it. It’s only good if it’s bad news…
CJ:
I must disagree with your assertion. Since there is no way of determining if it IS actually “good for the Iraqi people” your cannot make that claim. Remember, so far this war was supposed to “liberate” Iraq, and what has Bush and Co done so far? Thousands of Iraqis dead, thousands more wounded. How is THAT “good for the Iraqi people?”
As for liberals and that nonsense that “the only good news is bad news”… Well, reality is what it is, and since the news is ugly, it must be presented as ugly. Again as we have no way of knowing for certain what is going to transpire in Iraq, it could just as easily degrade into civil war as work out in the end as a peaceful democracy. I think that possibility must be expressed.
So, I really fail to understand how being realistic about the world qualifies in your mind as equating to revelling in bad news.
If, however, you meant fear-mongering. I think that conservatives are at least as guilty. I mean Bush backs up some outrageous policy with insisting it will defeat terrorists and make America safe. How is that NOT spreading the fear of terrorism?
Finally, I think the point of all the talk of Iraqi “sovereignty” is that there is no actual change of sovereignty, and certainly no change for the Iraqi on the street. “Sovereignty” becomes nothing more than a hollw word with no real connection to reality.
P.S. Although to be fair to you, yes, Dems do find some amusement in watching Bush and Co self-destruct in policy implosion after policy implosion….
